Remember those COVID lockdown times?! That's when I found a blister-like red spot on the surface of my breast. Obviously no access to doctors was allowed so I completed the online form and received a phone call from the practice nurse. To be cautious she put me on the 2 week referral for cancer. I was seen on the evening of the last day of the 2 weeks and I was worried that they were going through the motions. However, the lovely staff at Bolton Royal Infirmary were very attentive. I had a mammogram and a biopsy that night and met my consultant who said that they had found something inside that was "abnormal and suspicious"! A week later the results came back - Grade 1 - not too bad! I was to have a lumpectomy, radiotherapy and Letrozole for 5 years. Then he did a biopsy on the 'spot' that I found - Grade 2! Still going to be dealt within the same procedure with the removal of first lymph node for testing. Surgery booked for 5th January 2021 - the day of the second national lockdown! Thankfully the procedure went ahead that day. A difficult day for my husband who was not allowed to come with me. A week later results day! 4 more areas of cancer were found during my operation that hadn't shown up on the mammogram and it was in the lymph node too. Mastectomy and complete lymph node clearance was advised and booked in as soon as possible. I got a date 4 weeks later - a cancellation because the patient had tested positive for COVID. All went well thankfully and after an overnight stay I went home lopsided! I chose to stay flat although I was offered an implant on that side with the brief that it 'would look good in a bra'. I told my lovely (male) consultant that I wasn't having 1 that looked like a 16-year-old and 1 that had fed 3 babies - he had a good laugh at that! And here we are! Still taking the tablets for 10 years and very grateful for the amazing treatment that I received from everyone involved. And thank you to Alison and Anna for such a special day. Turquoise is my birthstone colour to remind me that I am still alive, healthy and living my best life!
